The first rule of list marketing…
Our first popcorn marketing lesson comes from one of my all-time favorite movies, Fight Club. As anyone who’s seen this fabulous film knows, the first rule of fight club is don’t talk about fight club (oops). In the same way, the first rule of third-party emails is don’t act like a third-party email. Think about it. Third party emails sound creepy, anonymous, and remote. Your email is not a third-party email. It’s a conversation-starting email. It’s a friendly wave, a doffed hat, a fine how do you do. It’s an icebreaker, and like all good icebreakers, it’s got to be as disarming, witty and memorable as possible. Think about the best icebreakers you’ve ever experienced. Did they offer you a compliment? Make a great joke? Comment on a similarity? Treat you to something? Offer you help with something you’re struggling with? Yes! The lesson is clear: When it comes to breaking the ice with your target audience, third-party emails depend on a great approach. The rules for striking up a rapport are the same online as offline. Don’t worry about creating something elaborate, just focus on being sincere and helpful, and your third-party email will come off as a unique and beautiful snowflake every time.
