Great article. There is one more thing I would mention; mobile ready headlines. If you are using an iPhone or smart phone of one sort or another you probably see a few of the lines from the body of each email you receive, in your email box prior to viewing the message in its entirety. For most HTML emails I receive (mine is set to preview 3 lines), I continually see something like "if you are having trouble viewing this message...". What a sad waste. A better instance would be something that ties to the subject line and works as a call-to-action. The action = the receiver opening the email. Although delivery is the first step to a successful campaign – an open is the first step toward a conversion.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the question. I've done a lot of side by side comparisons and, in my experience, a lead - once its gone through the qualification process - performs about the same. I wish I could say that I rented lead performs better, but I don't have any evidence to suggest that.

Good observations on the nuances of negotiating a list buy and very interesting metrics for the relative cost of a lead. I am curious if you have research on relative cost per order and if one channel has better conversions over another? My guess is that list rental might be better in the long term (lifetime value)because it is targeted or branded and some keywords that drive sales are not, though their long tail effect is profitable.
